SGX Nifty Is Now GIFT Nifty: What Changed

In July 2023, SGX Nifty officially moved to NSE's GIFT City International Exchange (NSE IX) in Gujarat. The product is now called GIFT Nifty, but most Indian traders still search for "SGX Nifty" out of habit. The function is identical — it's a Nifty 50 futures contract that trades when the Indian market is closed.

Key facts:

  • Ticker: NIFTY on NSE IX (previously NK on SGX)
  • Contract: Same as NSE Nifty futures (25 units per lot)
  • Settlement: Cash-settled in USD
  • Trading hours: 6:30 AM — 11:30 PM IST (nearly 17 hours)

The shift to GIFT City means SEBI has oversight, volume is growing, and the data is now directly accessible from NSE. For pre-market analysis, nothing changes — you still use GIFT Nifty to predict where NSE will open.

GIFT Nifty Trading Hours vs NSE

SessionTime (IST)What It Tells You
Early morning6:30 AM — 9:00 AMReaction to overnight US/Europe moves. Low volume but directional signal.
Pre-NSE open8:30 AM — 9:15 AMMost critical window. This is where you predict the NSE opening gap.
NSE overlap9:15 AM — 3:30 PMGIFT Nifty tracks NSE almost tick-for-tick. No extra edge here.
Post-NSE close3:30 PM — 5:30 PMReaction to NSE closing. Sets the base for the evening session.
Evening (London/NY)5:30 PM — 11:30 PMFollows global risk sentiment. Big moves if US data surprises (CPI, FOMC).

How to Use GIFT Nifty for Pre-Market Analysis

Every morning before 9:15 AM, smart traders check GIFT Nifty to predict the NSE opening. Here's the exact process:

Step 1: Check GIFT Nifty at 8:45 AM

Open TradingView and search for NSE:NIFTY1! (GIFT Nifty continuous contract) or check the live price on nseix.com. Note the current GIFT Nifty price and compare to yesterday's NSE Nifty close.

  • GIFT Nifty 100+ points above yesterday's close → expect a gap-up open
  • GIFT Nifty 100+ points below → expect a gap-down open
  • Within 50 points → expect a flat open

Step 2: Check the Gap Tendency

Not all gaps are equal. Data from 2024-2026 shows:

  • Gaps of 50-100 points: Fill within the first hour 65% of the time. These are noise.
  • Gaps of 100-200 points: Fill 40% of the time. Trade the direction of the gap, not against it.
  • Gaps of 200+ points: Rarely fill same day. These are driven by global events (US crash, Fed surprise). Trade with the gap.

Step 3: Set Your Strategy Before 9:15

Based on GIFT Nifty, decide before the market opens:

  • Gap up 50-100 pts: Wait for gap fill. Use ORB-15 strategy — the opening range will likely capture the fill.
  • Gap up 100+ pts: Don't short the gap. Wait for a pullback and buy the dip. The trend from GIFT Nifty usually continues for the first hour.
  • Gap down 100+ pts: Don't buy the dip immediately. Wait for a lower high on 5-min chart, then sell. Panic selling cascades in the first 30 minutes.
  • Flat open (within 50 pts): Use the first 15-min candle range as your ORB. These days are clean for breakout strategies.

GIFT Nifty vs Other Pre-Market Indicators

IndicatorAccuracyWhere to Check
GIFT NiftyBest (90%+ correlation with NSE open)nseix.com, TradingView NSE:NIFTY1!
US Futures (S&P 500)Good (70% correlation)TradingView ES1!, Investing.com
Asian Markets (Nikkei, Hang Seng)Moderate (50-60% correlation)TradingView, Bloomberg
Dollar Index (DXY)Inverse (strong dollar = Nifty down)TradingView DXY

GIFT Nifty is the only indicator that directly prices Nifty. Everything else (US futures, Asian markets) is a proxy. Always start with GIFT Nifty, then check the others for confirmation.

Can You Trade GIFT Nifty Directly?

Yes, but with conditions:

  • Through NSE IX: You need a broker with GIFT City access. Some Indian brokers (IIFL, Kotak) offer NSE IX access, but with higher margins than regular NSE.
  • Advantage: Trade Nifty from 6:30 AM — 11:30 PM IST (vs 9:15 AM — 3:30 PM on NSE). React to FOMC decisions at midnight. Trade the gap before NSE opens.
  • Minimum lot: Same as NSE — 25 units. Margin roughly Rs 1-1.5 lakh.

Alternative for smaller capital: Trade global indices (S&P 500, DAX) through Exness or XM during evening hours. These move in similar patterns to Nifty but with lower margin requirements ($50-100 per trade at 1:100 leverage). When US markets tank at night, both S&P and Nifty open down the next morning — you capture the move on S&P the night before, no need to wait for NSE.

Morning Routine: The 8:45 AM Checklist

Here's the exact pre-market routine used by professional Nifty traders:

  1. 8:45 AM: Check GIFT Nifty price. Calculate expected gap vs yesterday's close.
  2. 8:50 AM: Check US market close (S&P 500, Nasdaq). Did they rally or sell off?
  3. 8:52 AM: Check Asian markets (Nikkei opened at 6:30 AM IST). Trend confirming GIFT Nifty signal?
  4. 8:55 AM: Check India VIX futures. VIX rising = volatile day (wider stops needed). VIX falling = range day.
  5. 9:00 AM: Check FII/DII data from yesterday (published at 8:30 AM). Net buyers or sellers?
  6. 9:05 AM: Check economic calendar — any events today? RBI, inflation data, quarterly earnings?
  7. 9:10 AM: Set your plan: which strategy, which direction, what position size. Write it down.
  8. 9:15 AM: Market opens. Execute the plan. Don't deviate.

This routine takes 25 minutes. It's the difference between trading with a thesis and gambling on gut feeling.
