Complete guide to Indian stock market hours in 2026. NSE, BSE, MCX, and currency market timings. Pre-market, normal trading, and after-hours sessions explained.

stock market timing india 2026

Knowing exactly when each Indian market opens, closes, and pauses is the difference between catching a move and missing it entirely. Indian traders juggle multiple exchanges — NSE for equities, MCX for commodities, NSE again for currency derivatives — each with different hours, different pre-market rules, and different settlement windows. Add international forex on top and you have a 24-hour trading day that most Indian traders only use 6 hours of.

NSE and BSE Equity Trading Hours

Pre-open session: 09:00 to 09:15 IST. Orders are collected but not executed. The opening price is determined by an equilibrium algorithm at 09:08. You can place, modify, or cancel orders during this window. No trades execute until 09:15.

Normal trading: 09:15 to 15:30 IST. This is your main window. Nifty 50, BankNifty, and all F&O contracts trade here. Intraday positions must be squared off by 15:15-15:20 on most discount brokers (MIS product type). The first 30 minutes (09:15-09:45) and last 30 minutes (15:00-15:30) carry the highest volume and volatility.

Closing session: 15:30 to 15:40 IST. A closing auction determines the official closing price. Only limit orders at or near the closing price are accepted. This is where mutual fund NAVs are calculated.

After-market orders (AMO): 15:40 to 09:00 IST (next day). You can place orders that execute at the next day's open. Useful for traders who analyze charts after work and want to position overnight. AMO orders queue and execute at 09:15 the next morning.

MCX Commodity Trading Hours

Normal session: 09:00 to 23:30 IST (Monday to Friday). MCX runs much longer than NSE — 14.5 hours versus 6.25 hours. Gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, and base metals all trade through the evening.

Key windows within MCX hours:

  • 09:00-14:00 IST: Moderate activity. Domestic demand-driven. Gold and silver track Asian benchmarks.
  • 14:00-17:30 IST: London open overlap. Commodity volatility picks up. Gold moves with London spot fixing.
  • 17:30-21:30 IST: Peak hours. London-NY overlap drives maximum gold and crude oil movement. This is when most MCX profits are made.
  • 21:30-23:30 IST: Winding down. US session continuing but volumes thin. Spread widening on some contracts.

Settlement: MCX futures settle on expiry day at 5 PM IST. Options expire at close of trading on expiry day. Check the MCX calendar for monthly and weekly expiry dates.

Currency Derivatives on NSE

Trading hours: 09:00 to 17:00 IST. Currency pairs available: USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR. The NSE currency segment closes at 5 PM — two hours before MCX closes and seven hours before international forex sessions end.

Best hours for USD/INR: 09:15-10:30 IST (RBI fixing window, bank order flow) and 14:00-16:00 IST (London session overlap, maximum liquidity).

International Forex Hours from IST

When NSE closes at 15:30 and MCX at 23:30, global forex markets keep running. Here is how the 24-hour forex cycle maps to IST:

  • Sydney session: 03:30 to 12:30 IST. Low volatility. AUD/NZD pairs most active.
  • Tokyo session: 05:30 to 14:30 IST. USD/JPY, AUD/JPY pairs. Moderate volatility. Your morning window.
  • London session: 13:30 to 22:30 IST. Peak global forex liquidity. EUR/USD, GBP/USD move most. Your afternoon and evening window.
  • New York session: 18:30 to 01:30 IST. USD pairs, gold, crude oil. US data releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC) hit between 18:00-20:30 IST.
  • London-NY overlap: 18:30 to 22:30 IST. THE most volatile 4-hour window in forex. If you trade only one session from India, trade this one.

Best Hours for Each Trading Style

Intraday equity traders: 09:15-09:45 IST (opening momentum) and 14:30-15:15 IST (closing push). The midday lull from 12:00-13:30 IST is best avoided — spreads widen and false breakouts increase on Nifty.

Commodity traders: 17:30-21:30 IST. The London-NY overlap window. Gold and crude oil move the most. If you can only trade one MCX window, trade this one.

Forex traders: 18:30-22:30 IST. London-NY overlap. Maximum pip range on EUR/USD (80-120 pips typical). All major US data releases happen in this window.

Part-time traders with day jobs: Evening session 18:30-22:30 IST on international forex platforms. You miss NSE entirely but catch the most profitable forex window after dinner. Many Indian traders with 9-to-5 jobs build their entire trading career in this 4-hour evening window.

Holidays and Special Sessions

NSE and BSE observe approximately 15-16 trading holidays per year. MCX follows a similar calendar with some differences. Muhurat trading during Diwali evening is a special one-hour session with symbolic significance — low volume but culturally important.

International forex markets have no Indian holidays. When NSE is closed for Republic Day or Holi, EUR/USD and gold continue trading. Indian traders on XM or Exness can trade normally during Indian holidays — an advantage that domestic-only traders miss entirely.
