MetaTrader 5 is the platform that connects Indian traders to global markets. Whether you want to trade EUR/USD from Mumbai, gold from Chennai, or US stock indices from Delhi, MT5 is the interface that makes it happen. But downloading MT5 is only the first step. Configuring it correctly for the Indian timezone, setting up the right chart templates, installing indicators that matter for our trading hours, and connecting to the right broker server -- these details determine whether MT5 becomes a powerful trading tool or a confusing mess of charts you never use. This guide walks you through every step, from download to your first trade, optimised specifically for Indian traders on XM and Exness.

I remember my first encounter with MT5. I downloaded it, saw a dozen charts with squiggly lines, panicked, and closed the application. That was three years ago. Today, MT5 is open on my screen 10 hours a day, and I cannot imagine trading without it. The platform is intimidating only because nobody walks you through the setup properly. This guide fixes that. For a comparison with MT4, see our MT4 vs MT5 comparison.

Step 1: Download MT5 for Your Device

Windows PC

The recommended method is downloading from your broker directly, not from the MetaQuotes website. This ensures you get the broker-customized version with pre-configured server connections.

For XM: Log into your XM Members Area. Navigate to "Downloads" or "Platforms". Click "MetaTrader 5 for Windows". The file is approximately 4 MB (the installer downloads additional files during installation). Run the installer, accept the licence agreement, and complete the standard installation. Total installation time: 2-3 minutes on a broadband connection.

For Exness: Log into your Exness Personal Area. Go to "Platforms" section. Download "MetaTrader 5 for Windows". Same installation process. The Exness version comes with their server pre-listed, saving you the step of manually searching for the broker.

System requirements: Windows 7 or later (Windows 10/11 recommended). 512 MB RAM minimum (4 GB recommended for smooth multi-chart operation). 50 MB disk space. Internet connection with at least 1 Mbps speed. MT5 runs on modest hardware -- even a 5-year-old laptop handles it comfortably.

macOS

MT5 now has a native macOS version, eliminating the need for Wine or PlayOnMac workarounds that plagued earlier versions. Download the .dmg file from your broker website. Drag the MT5 application to your Applications folder. On first launch, macOS may show a security warning because the app is from an identified developer but not from the App Store. Go to System Settings, Privacy and Security, and click "Open Anyway" to authorize MT5.

Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) Macs run MT5 through Rosetta 2 translation. Performance is excellent -- chart rendering is smooth, and CPU usage stays under 5% during normal operation. There is no native ARM version of MT5 yet, but the Rosetta performance is indistinguishable from native in practice.

iOS (iPhone/iPad)

Search "MetaTrader 5" in the App Store. The app is published by MetaQuotes Software Corp. Download size is approximately 60 MB. After installation, open the app and you will be prompted to log in to a trading account. Search for your broker (XM or Exness) in the broker list, enter your credentials, and the app connects to your account. For a detailed mobile trading comparison, see our best forex trading app India review.

Android

Search "MetaTrader 5" in Google Play Store. Published by MetaQuotes Software Corp. Download size approximately 50 MB. Same login process as iOS: find your broker, enter credentials, start trading. The Android version supports widgets for your home screen showing live prices of your watched instruments.

Step 2: Connect to Your Broker Account

Connecting to XM

When you open MT5 desktop for the first time (or through File, Open an Account), you will see a list of brokers. Search for "XM" in the broker search field. You will see multiple options:

  • XM Global Limited - Real -- For live trading accounts (IFSC entity, most Indian traders)
  • XM Global Limited - Demo -- For demo/practice accounts
  • Trading Point of Financial Instruments - Real -- CySEC entity (EU traders)

Select the appropriate server based on your account type. Enter your account number (found in the XM welcome email) and your MT5 password (set during registration or available in the Members Area). Click "Connect" and you should see the connection status change to a green bar at the bottom right of the platform showing the ping time to the server.

If connection fails: verify your account number is for MT5, not MT4 (they are different accounts). Check that you selected the correct server (Real vs Demo). Reset your password from the XM Members Area if needed. Ensure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking MT5 network connections.

Connecting to Exness

Same process. Search for "Exness" in the broker list. Select "Exness Technologies Ltd" for the real server or "Exness Technologies Ltd - Demo" for the demo server. Enter your Exness account number and password. Exness accounts can be managed from within the Exness Personal Area where you can create multiple MT5 accounts for different strategies.

Step 3: Configure Charts for Indian Timezone

This is where most guides fail Indian traders. MT5 server time is determined by the broker, not by your system clock. XM servers run on GMT+2 (GMT+3 during European summer time). Exness servers run on GMT+0. Neither matches IST (GMT+5:30). You cannot change the server time within MT5. But you can work around it.

Method 1: Mental Conversion Table

IST TimeXM Server (GMT+2)Exness Server (GMT+0)Market Event
09:00 IST05:3003:30Indian market open
13:30 IST10:0008:00London session open
15:30 IST12:0010:00Indian market close
18:00 IST14:3012:30NY session open / US data
20:00 IST16:3014:30US economic data (late)
23:00 IST19:3017:30NY session close

Print this table and keep it next to your screen for the first few weeks. After a month, the conversion becomes automatic.

Method 2: Clock Indicator

Install a local time clock indicator from the MT5 Market (free). Go to Insert, Indicators, Custom, or access the Market tab in MT5. Search for "Local Time" or "Multi Clock". These indicators display your system clock (which is set to IST) directly on your chart, eliminating the need for manual conversion. I have a small clock indicator in the bottom-right corner of every chart showing IST. This is the most practical solution for Indian traders.

Method 3: Session Overlay Indicator

Install a trading session indicator that highlights the London, New York, and Asian sessions directly on your chart with colored background zones. Search the MT5 Market for "Session Indicator" or "Market Sessions". Once installed, you can visually see when each major session starts and ends without converting timezones. The London zone (13:30-22:30 IST) appears in one color, NY (18:00-01:30 IST) in another, and Asian (04:00-13:00 IST) in a third. This visual reference is invaluable for session-based trading strategies.

Step 4: Customize Your Market Watch

The default Market Watch in MT5 shows hundreds of instruments. This is overwhelming and slows down the platform. Right-click in the Market Watch panel, select "Hide All" to clear it, then add only the instruments you actually trade.

My recommended Market Watch for Indian traders starting out:

  • Forex: EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, AUDUSD, USDCHF, USDINR (if available)
  • Commodities: XAUUSD (gold), XAGUSD (silver), USOIL (crude oil)
  • Indices: US500 (S&P 500), NAS100 (Nasdaq), US30 (Dow Jones)

That is 12 instruments. Clean, manageable, and covering the instruments most relevant to Indian traders. You can always add more later as you expand your trading universe. To add an instrument, right-click in Market Watch, select "Symbols", navigate the category tree, and double-click the instrument to add it. Our best forex pairs for Indian traders article explains why these specific instruments work well from the IST timezone.

Step 5: Set Up Chart Templates

A chart template saves your preferred chart settings (colors, indicators, timeframe) so you can apply them to any new chart with one click. Here are three templates I recommend creating.

Template 1: Clean Price Action

Background: black. Candle colors: green (bullish), red (bearish). No indicators. Grid lines: off. This template is for pure price action analysis -- support/resistance levels, candlestick patterns, and trendlines. Apply this to Daily and H4 charts for higher-timeframe analysis.

To create: open a chart, right-click and go to Properties. Set your preferred colors. Remove all indicators. Then right-click the chart, select Template, Save Template, and name it "CleanPA". To apply to any chart later: right-click, Template, select "CleanPA".

Template 2: Trend Trading

Indicators: 50 EMA (blue), 200 EMA (red), RSI (14) in a separate window below the chart. This template is for trend identification and entry timing. When price is above both EMAs and RSI is above 50, the trend is bullish. Below both EMAs with RSI under 50 is bearish. Apply this to H1 and H4 charts for swing trading setups.

Template 3: Scalping

Indicators: 9 EMA, 21 EMA, Bollinger Bands (20, 2), Volume indicator below. This template is for M5 and M15 charts during active sessions (London and NY overlap). Entry signals: EMA crossover confirmed by Bollinger Band touch. Volume confirms the move is supported by participation.

Save each template with a clear name. Switching between analysis modes takes one click instead of reconfiguring indicators every time you change your approach.

MT5 comes with 80+ built-in indicators, but several third-party indicators are especially useful for Indian traders. All of these are available free from the MT5 Market (accessible from the Market tab within MT5) or from the MQL5.com community.

VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price)

VWAP is the benchmark indicator for intraday traders. It shows the average price weighted by volume, giving you a reference point for whether the current price is above or below the day's fair value. Institutional traders use VWAP as a reference level, so it acts as natural support and resistance during the trading day. Search "VWAP" in the MT5 Market and install the highest-rated free version.

ATR (Average True Range) -- Built In

Already included in MT5 by default (Insert, Indicators, Oscillators, Average True Range). Set the period to 14. ATR tells you the average daily range of an instrument in pips or points. Use it to set stop losses: a stop loss of 1.5x ATR accommodates normal volatility without being too tight. For gold (XAU/USD), the 14-period ATR on Daily charts is typically $20-30, meaning your stop loss should be at least $30-45 for Daily chart trades.

Session Overlay Indicator

As mentioned earlier, this highlights trading sessions directly on your chart. Critical for Indian traders who need to know when London and NY sessions start and end in their local time. Free versions are available in the MT5 Market.

Candlestick Pattern Recognizer

Automatically labels candlestick patterns (engulfing, hammer, doji, morning star, evening star) on your chart. Useful for beginners learning to identify patterns and for experienced traders who want a quick visual scan. Search "Candle Pattern" in the MT5 Market.

Pivot Point Indicator

Calculates daily, weekly, and monthly pivot points with support and resistance levels. These levels are used by institutional traders and act as natural price magnets. The built-in MT5 indicator library does not include pivots, but free versions are widely available in the Market. Our pivot points strategy guide explains how to trade these levels.

Step 7: Mobile App Setup

Once your desktop MT5 is configured, set up the mobile app to monitor trades on the go. The mobile app does not sync chart templates or indicators from desktop, so you will need to configure charts separately on your phone.

Login: Open the MT5 app. Tap the accounts icon (top left on Android, bottom right on iOS). Tap the "+" button to add a new account. Search for your broker (XM or Exness). Enter your account credentials. The app connects to the same account as your desktop, showing identical positions, balance, and equity.

Enable push notifications: In the MT5 desktop application, go to Tools, Options, Notifications. Enter your MetaQuotes ID (found in the mobile app under Settings, Messages, MetaQuotes ID). This links your desktop and mobile. Now you can send price alerts from desktop that trigger push notifications on your phone. Set alerts for key levels on your primary instruments. For detailed mobile trading tips, see our trading app comparison.

Optimize for Indian connectivity: If you trade in areas with inconsistent mobile data (common outside tier-1 cities), enable "Low bandwidth mode" in the MT5 mobile settings. This reduces the frequency of price updates and chart data downloads, keeping the app functional on 3G or weak 4G connections.

Step 8: Place Your First Trade

You have MT5 installed, connected to your broker, charts configured, and indicators loaded. Time for your first trade. I recommend starting on a demo account or using the XM $30 no-deposit bonus on a micro account.

  1. Select an instrument: Double-click EURUSD in the Market Watch to open an order window. Or right-click and select "New Order".
  2. Set volume: For beginners, start with 0.01 lots (micro lot). This is the minimum trade size on most accounts and limits your risk to approximately $0.10 per pip on EUR/USD.
  3. Set stop loss: Enter a stop loss level 50 pips below your entry (for a buy) or above (for a sell). This limits your maximum loss on this trade to approximately $5.
  4. Set take profit: Enter a take profit 100 pips above your entry (for a buy). This gives you a 1:2 risk-reward ratio.
  5. Click Buy or Sell: The trade executes within milliseconds. You will see it appear in the "Trade" tab at the bottom of MT5, showing your open position, current P&L, and the SL/TP levels you set.
  6. Monitor: Watch the trade progress on the chart. The entry level, stop loss, and take profit are drawn as horizontal lines directly on the chart. You can drag these lines to modify the order levels in real-time.

Congratulations. You have placed your first forex trade from India on MT5. For a comprehensive guide on what to trade first, see our best forex pairs for Indian traders article. If you want to practice risk-free first, our demo account guide walks you through the process.

Expert Advisors and Algorithmic Trading

MT5 supports automated trading through Expert Advisors (EAs), which are programs written in MQL5 that execute trades based on predefined rules. This is an advanced feature but one that many Indian traders find appealing because it allows trading during hours when you are not at the screen.

Built-in EAs: MT5 comes with a few example EAs in the Navigator panel under "Expert Advisors". These are for educational purposes and not recommended for live trading. They demonstrate the structure and capability of EAs.

Free EAs: The MT5 Market offers hundreds of free EAs. Approach these with extreme caution. Most free EAs are either outdated, over-optimized for past data, or designed to attract you into purchasing a paid version. Before running any EA on a live account, test it on a demo account for at least 3 months.

Custom EAs: If you have a profitable manual strategy with clear, programmable rules, you can hire an MQL5 developer to convert it into an EA. Costs range from $100-$2,000 depending on complexity. The MQL5 Freelance section connects you with verified developers. For Indian traders, this is particularly useful for strategies that work during London and NY sessions when you might be sleeping or at work.

VPS for 24/5 EA operation: EAs only run while MT5 desktop is open and connected. For continuous operation, you need a VPS (Virtual Private Server). Indian VPS providers offer Windows VPS from Rs 500-1500/month. International options like ForexVPS and Cloudzy start at $10-20/month. XM also offers a free VPS for clients maintaining certain deposit levels. Install MT5 on the VPS, load your EA, and it runs 24/5 without your home computer being on. Our EA guide covers this in complete detail.

Troubleshooting Common MT5 Issues in India

"Invalid account" error on login: Most common cause is using MT4 credentials on MT5 or vice versa. XM and Exness use separate account numbers for MT4 and MT5. Check your broker email for the correct MT5 account number. If you only have an MT4 account, create an MT5 account in the broker Members Area.

Slow chart loading: If charts take more than 5 seconds to load or scroll, reduce the maximum bars in chart. Go to Tools, Options, Charts, and reduce "Max bars in chart" from 100,000 to 50,000. Also close unused chart windows. Each open chart consumes memory and bandwidth.

Disconnection during trading: Indian broadband connections occasionally drop for seconds. MT5 reconnects automatically, but any pending modifications during the disconnection are lost. Solution: use a mobile hotspot as backup connectivity. Also, always set stop losses on every trade -- if your connection drops, the stop loss executes on the server side regardless of your local connection status.

Platform crashes on Windows: If MT5 crashes repeatedly, delete the terminal data folder (accessible via File, Open Data Folder) and reinstall. Also ensure your Windows is updated and your antivirus is not quarantining MT5 files. Some Indian antivirus programs (Quick Heal, K7) flag MT5 as suspicious due to its network activity.

"Trade is disabled" error: This means either your account is not verified, your account type does not support the instrument, or trading is disabled outside market hours. Check your broker's account status and ensure the market is open for the instrument you are trying to trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MetaTrader 5 free to download in India?

Yes. MT5 is completely free to download and use on all platforms: Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. You download it directly from your broker (XM or Exness) or from the MetaQuotes website. There is no subscription fee, no licence cost, and no hidden charges for the platform itself.

How do I set IST timezone on MT5?

MT5 server time is set by your broker and cannot be changed within the platform. XM uses GMT+2 (GMT+3 during DST) and Exness uses GMT+0. The workaround is to install a clock indicator from the MT5 Market that displays your local time on charts, or use a session overlay indicator that highlights London, NY, and Asian sessions visually.

Can I use MT5 on Mac for trading in India?

Yes. MetaTrader 5 has a native macOS version available from both XM and Exness. Download the .dmg file, install it, and log in with your trading credentials. The Mac version has the same features as Windows. Performance is excellent on Apple Silicon Macs running through Rosetta 2.

Which MT5 indicators work best for Indian traders?

The most effective MT5 indicators for Indian traders are: VWAP for intraday trading, session overlay indicators showing London/NY hours in IST, ATR for volatility-based stop losses, RSI (14) for overbought/oversold signals, and the 50/200 EMA combination for trend direction. All are available free in the MT5 indicator library.

Can I run Expert Advisors (EAs) on MT5 from India?

Yes. MT5 supports Expert Advisors for automated trading on both XM and Exness. EAs run on the desktop version only. For 24/5 operation, you need a Windows VPS (available from Rs 500/month from Indian providers). Both XM and Exness allow EA trading on all account types.
