Open XM Account from India: 7-Step Guide with PAN & Aadhaar

Updated April 4, 2026 — 20 min read

XM account opening process India PAN Aadhaar

Opening an XM account from India took me exactly 8 minutes for registration and 5 hours for verification. By the evening of the same day, I had deposited Rs 5,000 via UPI and placed my first trade on EUR/USD. The process is simpler than opening a Zerodha account, if I am being honest. No DMAT setup, no CDSL verification, no 3-day waiting period. Just PAN, Aadhaar, and a UPI ID.

But I have also seen Indian traders get stuck at every step. Wrong name format on PAN card. Blurry document uploads. Choosing the wrong account type. Not knowing what base currency to select. This guide eliminates every point of confusion. I am walking you through all 7 steps with the exact decisions I made, the documents I used, and the mistakes I avoided. By the end, you will have a fully verified, funded XM account ready to trade.

Before You Start: Documents You Need

Gather these before you begin registration. Having them ready means you can complete the entire process in one sitting instead of stopping midway to find your Aadhaar.

Identity Proof (Any One)

  • PAN Card (recommended): This is the fastest and most commonly accepted ID for Indian traders on XM. You need a clear photo or scan of the front side only. Name, PAN number, date of birth, and photo must all be clearly visible.
  • Passport: Photo page only. Must be valid (not expired). Useful if your PAN card has a name discrepancy.
  • Voter ID: Accepted but less common. PAN card is preferred.

Address Proof (Any One)

  • Aadhaar Card (recommended): Front and back. The address on your Aadhaar must match the address you enter during registration. If you have moved recently and your Aadhaar still shows your old address, either update your Aadhaar first or use a different address proof.
  • Bank Statement: Last 3 months from any Indian bank. Must show your name and current address. Download the PDF from your net banking portal.
  • Utility Bill: Electricity, gas, or water bill dated within the last 6 months. Must be in your name (not a family member's) and show your current address.

Payment Method

  • UPI (recommended): PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm. You need the UPI ID (e.g., yournumber@ybl for PhonePe) ready for deposit.
  • Netbanking: Any Indian bank that supports online transfers.
  • Bank wire: For larger deposits above Rs 1 lakh.

Step 1: Go to XM Registration Page and Select India

Navigate to the XM registration page. The first thing you see is a country selector. Choose "India" from the dropdown. This is important because it determines which XM entity you are registered under (IFSC for Indian traders) and which deposit methods are available. Selecting the wrong country means your PAN card will not be accepted for verification.

You will also see an option to choose your account type right on the registration page. Do not stress about this yet. I will cover account type selection in detail in Step 3. For now, know that you can always open additional account types later from within your XM Member Area. Your first choice is not permanent.

Step 2: Fill In Personal Information

This section asks for your full name, date of birth, country, phone number, and email address. Here is where precision matters:

Full Name: Enter your name exactly as it appears on your PAN card. If your PAN says "RAJESH KUMAR" in all caps, enter "Rajesh Kumar" (XM will normalize capitalization). If your PAN says "RAJESH KUMAR SHARMA" but you commonly go by "Rajesh Sharma," enter the full three-word name. Any mismatch between your registration name and PAN card name will cause verification rejection. I have seen this happen to at least four traders in my Telegram group.

Date of Birth: Must match your PAN card or passport. XM requires you to be at least 18 years old.

Phone Number: Enter your Indian mobile number with the +91 prefix. XM sends an SMS OTP for verification. Make sure you have access to this number when registering.

Email Address: Use an email you actively check. XM sends your MT5 login credentials, withdrawal confirmations, and account notifications here. Gmail or Outlook work fine. Avoid temporary or disposable email addresses.

Password: Set a strong password for your XM Member Area. This is separate from your MT5 trading password, which is assigned later. Include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and at least one special character.

Step 3: Choose Your Account Type

XM offers multiple account types. This is where most Indian beginners get confused. Here is a straightforward guide based on your situation:

Account TypeMin DepositLot SizeSpreadsBest For
Micro~Rs 4001,000 unitsFrom 1.0 pipBeginners, small capital
Standard~Rs 400100,000 unitsFrom 1.0 pipExperienced traders
Ultra Low Micro~Rs 4,2001,000 unitsFrom 0.6 pipCost-conscious beginners
Ultra Low Standard~Rs 4,200100,000 unitsFrom 0.6 pipActive traders wanting low spreads

My recommendation for Indian beginners: Start with Micro. The smaller lot sizes (1,000 units instead of 100,000) mean each pip is worth Rs 0.83 instead of Rs 83. This lets you practice with real money while limiting losses to amounts you can absorb. A 50-pip loss on a micro lot costs Rs 41. The same loss on a standard lot costs Rs 4,150. Learn to be profitable on micro lots before graduating to standard. For a detailed account type comparison, read our XM account types guide.

Base Currency: Select USD. XM does not offer INR as a base currency. Some traders choose EUR, but since most major pairs are USD-denominated, USD base simplifies your mental math. When you deposit Rs 5,000 via UPI, it converts to approximately $60 at the prevailing rate.

Leverage: XM lets you choose leverage during registration. Options range from 1:1 to 1:1000 depending on the account type. I recommend starting with 1:200 or 1:500. This provides sufficient flexibility without encouraging overexposure. You can change your leverage later from the Member Area.

Step 4: Complete the Trading Knowledge Questionnaire

After personal details, XM presents a questionnaire about your financial situation and trading experience. This is a regulatory requirement (IFSC regulation mandates it), not a qualifying exam. There is no pass or fail.

The questions cover:

  • Annual income range: Select your actual income bracket. This does not affect account approval.
  • Net worth: Approximate. Do not include your primary residence value.
  • Trading experience: How many years you have traded, which instruments you have experience with, your expected trading frequency.
  • Source of funds: Salary, business, savings, or investment income. Select what applies to you.
  • Investment objectives: Income, growth, speculation, or hedging.

Answer honestly. If you have never traded forex before, say so. XM will still approve your account but may display additional risk warnings. If you claim extensive experience you do not have, you might receive fewer educational prompts that would actually help you.

Step 5: Verify Email and Phone Number

XM sends a verification email with a confirmation link. Click it. If you do not see it within 5 minutes, check your spam or promotions folder. Gmail in particular likes to route XM emails to the Promotions tab.

Simultaneously, you receive an SMS OTP on your Indian mobile number. Enter the code on the XM website. This confirms your phone number and enables two-factor authentication for withdrawals later.

After email and phone verification, you can access the XM Member Area. Your account is created but not yet verified for trading. You can browse the platform, explore features, and even download MT5, but you cannot deposit or trade until document verification is complete.

Step 6: Upload PAN Card and Aadhaar for Verification

This is the step that determines whether you can start trading today or wait until next week. Here is how to get it right the first time.

Uploading Your PAN Card

In the XM Member Area, navigate to "Upload Documents" or "Verify Your Account." You will see two sections: Identity Document and Address Document.

For identity, select "PAN Card" and upload a clear image. Here are the requirements that trip people up:

  • Image quality: No blur, no glare, no shadow. Take the photo in good lighting. Place the PAN card on a dark surface (dark table, dark cloth) so the edges are clearly defined against the background.
  • Full visibility: All four corners of the card must be visible. Do not crop too tightly. Leave some background around the card.
  • Readable text: Your name, PAN number, date of birth, and photo must all be clearly legible. If the camera auto-focuses on the background instead of the card, try again.
  • File format: JPG, PNG, or PDF. Under 5 MB per file.
  • No editing: Do not use photo editing apps to "enhance" the image. XM's verification team checks for edited documents and will reject them.

Uploading Your Aadhaar Card

For address proof, select "Aadhaar Card" and upload front and back images. The critical detail: the address on your Aadhaar must match the address you entered during registration. If they do not match, your verification will be rejected.

If your Aadhaar address is outdated, you have three options: update your Aadhaar (takes 2-4 weeks), use a recent bank statement showing your current address instead, or use a utility bill. I used my Aadhaar because my address was current, and it was approved in 5 hours.

Verification Timeline

XM states verification takes up to 24 hours. In practice for Indian traders:

  • Documents submitted before 2 PM IST on a weekday: Usually verified within 4-8 hours (same day).
  • Documents submitted after 2 PM IST: May be verified same day or next morning.
  • Documents submitted on weekends: Processed on Monday during CySEC/IFSC business hours.

You receive an email notification when verification is approved. Once approved, your account status changes to "Fully Verified" in the Member Area, and you can deposit and trade immediately.

Step 7: Make Your First Deposit via UPI

Once verified, your first deposit takes about 90 seconds. Here is the exact process:

  1. Log into XM Member Area.
  2. Click "Deposit" in the main menu.
  3. Select "UPI" from the payment methods list.
  4. Enter the amount in INR (minimum Rs 400, I deposited Rs 5,000).
  5. Confirm your UPI ID or enter a new one.
  6. You are redirected to a payment page or receive a payment request on your UPI app.
  7. Approve the payment on PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm.
  8. Funds appear in your XM trading account within 1-5 minutes, converted to USD at the prevailing rate.

My Rs 5,000 deposit converted to $59.88 at the rate of Rs 83.50 per dollar. The funds showed in my MT5 terminal within 3 minutes. No processing delay, no pending status. Instant.

After Account Opening: What to Do First

Your account is verified and funded. Before you place your first trade, spend 30 minutes on these setup tasks that will save you grief later.

Download and Configure MT5

Download MetaTrader 5 from the XM Member Area (not from a random website). Log in using the server name and credentials from your welcome email. Set up your preferred chart layout: I recommend starting with EUR/USD and GBP/USD on the H1 timeframe with 50 and 200 period moving averages. This gives you a clean view of trend direction without overwhelming you with indicators. For detailed platform setup, see our MT5 India setup guide.

Set Your Withdrawal PIN

If you did not set a withdrawal PIN during registration, do it now in your Member Area under Security settings. This 6-digit PIN is required for every withdrawal request and protects your funds if someone accesses your Member Area login.

Claim the $30 No-Deposit Bonus

If the bonus promotion is active, claim it from the promotions section of your Member Area. This gives you an additional $30 in trading credit on top of your deposit. Combined with my Rs 5,000 deposit ($60) and the $30 bonus, I started with $90 in total trading capital. The bonus cannot be withdrawn, but profits earned from trading with it can. See our complete $30 bonus guide for details.

Start with Demo for 1 Week

Even though you have a funded live account, I recommend spending your first week on XM's demo account. The demo has the same instruments, spreads, and execution as the live account but uses virtual money. Use this week to learn MT5 order placement (market orders, limit orders, stop losses), understand how pips translate to profit and loss in your account, and test one simple strategy before risking real money.

Common Verification Rejections and How to Fix Them

About 15 to 20 percent of first-time verification submissions from India get rejected. Here are the most common reasons and exact fixes:

Rejection: Name Mismatch

Problem: Your registration name does not match your PAN card name. This happens when you use a nickname, abbreviation, or different spelling. "Rajesh K" on XM versus "RAJESH KUMAR" on PAN. "Priya S" versus "PRIYA SHARMA."

Fix: Contact XM live chat and request a name correction on your account. Provide the exact name as shown on your PAN card. The support team can update your registration name without requiring a new account.

Rejection: Blurry or Unreadable Document

Problem: The PAN card photo has blur, glare, shadow, or low resolution that makes text unreadable.

Fix: Retake the photo in natural daylight near a window. Place the card flat on a dark surface. Hold your phone directly above the card (not at an angle). Ensure the camera focuses on the card text, not the background. Upload the new image.

Rejection: Address Mismatch

Problem: The address on your Aadhaar card does not match the address you entered during XM registration.

Fix: Either update your registration address to match your Aadhaar (contact support) or submit a different address proof document (bank statement or utility bill) that shows the address you registered with.

Rejection: Expired Address Proof

Problem: Your utility bill or bank statement is older than 6 months.

Fix: Download a fresh bank statement from your net banking portal (HDFC, SBI, ICICI all allow PDF downloads of recent statements) or use your Aadhaar card which does not have an expiry date.

Rejection: Document Not in Registered Name

Problem: You uploaded an electricity bill that is in your father's or landlord's name.

Fix: Address proof must be in your own name. Use your Aadhaar card, your personal bank statement, or a utility bill where you are the named account holder. If no utility bills are in your name, a bank statement is the easiest alternative.

XM Account for Beginners vs Experienced Traders

Based on my experience and talking to dozens of Indian traders, here is my honest advice on which account setup to choose based on your level:

Complete Beginner (Never Traded Forex)

Open a Micro account. Deposit Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. Use 1:200 leverage. Claim the $30 bonus. Spend 2 weeks on demo, then switch to live with micro lots only (0.01 lot). Your goal for the first month is not profit. It is learning how orders work, understanding spreads, and experiencing the emotional impact of real money at risk.

Domestic Market Trader (NSE/BSE Experience, New to Forex)

Open an Ultra Low Micro account for the tighter spreads. Deposit Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. Use 1:500 leverage. You already understand charts and order types from equity trading. Your learning curve is specifically about forex: pip values, currency correlations, session timing (IST alignment with London and New York sessions), and how leverage works differently from equity margin. See our forex vs stocks comparison for Indian traders.

Experienced Forex Trader (Switching from Another Broker)

Open an Ultra Low Standard account. Deposit based on your trading capital needs. You already know what you need. The only new elements are XM's specific execution characteristics, their spread behavior during your typical trading hours, and their withdrawal process. Test with a smaller amount first, verify the withdrawal process works, then move your primary capital.

I get asked this every week in Telegram groups: "Is it legal to open an XM account from India?" The answer requires nuance.

XM is not SEBI-regulated. SEBI does not regulate any international forex broker. Domestic forex trading in India (on NSE currency derivatives) is fully SEBI-regulated. International forex trading through brokers like XM falls outside SEBI jurisdiction but is not explicitly illegal for individual traders.

The RBI Liberalized Remittance Scheme permits Indian residents to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for permissible purposes, which includes investments abroad. Depositing funds with an international broker for trading purposes is generally treated as an outward remittance under LRS. However, the regulatory landscape is evolving, and you should consult with a tax professional if you are depositing significant amounts. For a detailed analysis, read our forex trading legality guide for India.

Regardless of the regulatory classification, you are required to report all trading income (profits and losses) from international brokers on your Indian income tax return. Forex trading profits are taxable under either speculative or non-speculative business income depending on the instrument and holding period. Maintain complete records of all deposits, withdrawals, and trade history for ITR filing.

Troubleshooting: What If Something Goes Wrong

Cannot Receive SMS OTP

Some Indian mobile networks delay or block international SMS. If you do not receive the OTP within 5 minutes, click "Resend OTP." If it still does not arrive, try switching from SMS to email OTP (if the option is available) or contact XM live chat for manual phone verification.

UPI Payment Fails During Deposit

Common causes: insufficient balance in your linked bank account, daily UPI transaction limit reached (check with your bank), or temporary UPI network issues. Try again after 30 minutes or switch to a different UPI app. If PhonePe fails, try Google Pay or Paytm with the same UPI transaction.

MT5 Login Credentials Not Working

Ensure you are using the correct server name (it is in your welcome email, e.g., "XMGlobal-MT5"). The MT5 password is different from your Member Area password. If you cannot find your MT5 credentials, reset them from the Member Area under "My Accounts" and then "Change Password."

Account Approved but $30 Bonus Not Showing

The bonus may need to be manually claimed from the Promotions section. If there is no claim button, contact live chat with your account number. Some promotional periods have specific registration windows, and the support team can confirm eligibility and activate the bonus manually if applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open an XM account from India without a passport?

Yes. XM accepts PAN card as the primary identity document for Indian traders. You do not need a passport. Upload your PAN card for identity verification and Aadhaar card for address proof. Both documents together satisfy XM's KYC requirements for Indian residents.

How long does XM account verification take for Indian traders?

XM account verification for Indian traders typically takes 1 to 24 hours during business days. If you submit clear PAN card and Aadhaar documents during IST morning hours (before 2 PM), most traders report verification completion within 4 to 8 hours. Weekend submissions are processed on the next business day.

What is the minimum deposit for XM in India via UPI?

The minimum deposit on XM via UPI is approximately Rs 400 (equivalent to USD 5). This applies to Micro and Standard accounts. However, for practical trading with proper risk management, I recommend starting with at least Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 to have sufficient margin for micro lot positions.

Why was my XM account verification rejected?

Common rejection reasons include: blurry or glare-affected PAN card photo, name mismatch between registration and PAN card, expired address proof document (must be dated within 6 months), or Aadhaar address not matching the address entered during registration. Resubmit clear documents with matching information to resolve the issue.

Is it legal to open an XM account from India?

Opening an XM account from India is not prohibited by Indian law. XM is not SEBI-regulated, but Indian residents can legally use international brokers under the RBI Liberalized Remittance Scheme which permits outward remittances up to USD 250,000 per financial year for investments. Ensure you comply with LRS documentation and report any income from international trading in your ITR.
